Vietnamese Americans—the largest group of refugees ever resettled in American history—are transforming social, political, and economic developments in Vietnam and the US. This volume represents the first-ever effort to craft a working framework for researching, teaching, and learning about this dynamic community. This is also the first volume of its kind that bridges the scholarship of modern Vietnam (History) with that of Vietnamese Americans (Ethnic Studies).
The book includes 14 chapters besides an introduction by the editors. Contributors to the volume hail from many scholarly disciplines and present cutting-edged scholarship. Placing Vietnamese Americans front and center, our novel framework traces the history of this community to socially and culturally vibrant postcolonial South Vietnam, then dives deeply into segments of community life spanning racial interactions, female entrepreneurship, and local, national, and transnational civic and political participation. The third and final part seeks to understand how collective memory and identity are produced and circulated in the community.
This volume can serve as a great resource to design upper-division undergraduate or graduate courses on Vietnamese Americans, or as a reference or resource for graduate seminars in American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Asian American Studies, modern Vietnamese history, Vietnam War, and Refugee and Diaspora Studies. Currently no other such volume exists.

Cuốn sách bao gồm 14 chương bên cạnh phần giới thiệu của chủ biên. Những tác giả có bài trong sách đến từ nhiều ngành học khác nhau và trình bày những nghiên cứu mới nhất. Đặt người Mỹ gốc Việt vào vị trí trung tâm, cách tiếp cận của chúng tôi lần theo lịch sử của cộng đồng này từ xã hội sôi động và nền văn hóa phong phú của miền Nam Việt Nam tự do, sau đó đi sâu vào tìm hiểu cuộc sống cộng đồng người Mỹ gốc Việt bao gồm các chủ đề như quan hệ với các chủng tộc khác, hoạt động kinh doanh của phụ nữ, và đời sống chính trị với các hoạt động ở địa phương, trên phạm vi quốc gia và xuyên quốc gia. Phần thứ ba và phần cuối cùng tìm hiểu cách thức sáng tạo ra và lưu truyền trí nhớ và bản sắc tập thể trong cộng đồng.
Tập sách này là một nguồn tài liệu tuyệt vời để thiết kế các khóa học đại học về người Mỹ gốc Việt, hoặc làm tài liệu tham khảo cho các lớp sau đại học về ngành Hoa Kỳ học, Dân tộc học, Người Mỹ gốc Á, Lịch sử Việt Nam hiện đại, Chiến tranh Việt Nam, Người tị nạn, và Người di cư. Hiện tại không có tập sách nào khác có thể đóng vai trò này.
